The route
Where we went
1.Perissa
Our base — a quiet black-sand beach town with sunbeds and seaside tavernas. Much more affordable than Oia.
2.Fira
Shops, gyros (vegetarian options too) and a night in a traditional cave house.
3.Oia & Amoudi Bay
The famous views and cliffside dining. In summer, book restaurants ahead.
4.Ios
A ferry away — less crowded, more affordable, great beaches.
In July 2018 we landed in Santorini and started our seven days the best possible way: renting a scooter right at the airport.
Where we stayed
We based ourselves in Perissa, a quiet beach town with black sand, sunbeds and tavernas right by the sea. Our Airbnb was cosy and a short walk from the beach — and Perissa is far kinder on the wallet than places like Oia.
Days on two wheels
We scootered up to Fira, wandered the shops, ate gyros, and spent one night in a traditional cave house — worth it just for the experience.
Then came Oia and Amoudi Bay, known for those views and cliffside dining. If you're visiting in summer, book restaurants in advance: it gets crowded and hot. Stay hydrated and don't skimp on sunscreen.
Santorini is touristy — but it's worth it.
Eating vegetarian
Easier than you'd think. Look for moussaka (veggie versions), fava bean purée, Greek salad and spanakopita. Local groceries are great for quick snacks, and most cafés understand vegetarian requests.
A hop to Ios
Before leaving, we took the ferry to Ios — less crowded, more affordable, with great beaches. If you have a spare day or two, go.
Our tip: travel off-peak, get around by scooter, and just enjoy the scenery.
